24. Garden of the Gods Bizarre Bands

Reddish-brown swirls and rings note the liesegang bands found on rock formations along the Observation Trail at the Garden of the Gods Recreation Area

On the observation trail at the Garden of the Gods Recreation Area are the unique dark, reddish-brown swirls and rings on the rocks. These rings are called liesegang bands. When this sandstone was underground,  it was saturated with groundwater mixed with iron. Chemical change caused the iron to rust between the rock particles. The raised dark bands have resisted weathering compared to the softer, light-colored rock. The patterns of the bands are the result of these chemical changes
